Learning by Hearings – Summer 2026 Updates

It’s been a busy summer over here at Learning by Hearings! We hosted our fourth annual Summer Collaboration team; published a new U.S. history lesson plan; updated all of our existing lessons with Spanish and Arabic translations of secondary sources and new student-facing slide decks; and launched the application for our pilot group.

For Summer Team 2026, we hosted 22 teachers from all over the state here on campus for three days of professional development. Teachers were divided into three expert groups: a middle school U.S. history group, a high school U.S. history group, and a high school civics group. All week, these groups worked together to create three brand-new LbH lesson plans, led by members of our content team. We had a wonderful time, and we can’t wait for next year.

A political cartoon depicting an eagle spreading its wings over the whole world.

How did America go from Washington’s warnings against foreign entanglements to annexing Hawai’i in 1898? Our newest free lesson uses the overthrow of Queen Lili’uokalani as a case study for U.S. imperialism, complete with primary sources, student worksheets, and a slide deck. Students wrap up by creating their own political cartoons to answer: “Has America always seen itself as an imperial power?”

Have you ever wished there were slides to go along with Learning by Hearings lesson plans? What about translations for secondary sources?

We are delighted to announce that all our secondary sources now have Spanish, Arabic, and audio versions. And that’s not all; lesson plans now come with slide shows, too.

Help shape the future of Learning by Hearings! We’re recruiting Michigan high school U.S. History and Civics teachers (public or charter schools, non-AP courses, 2+ sections per semester) for a paid pilot for the 2026-27 school year. Participants will teach 2 LbH lessons per semester, join brief group meetings and check-ins, and share feedback and student work. Earn up to $500/semester for a full year’s commitment.
