Outside the Classroom

Through our extra-curricular program – the Mock Oversight Hearing – Learning by Hearings introduces participants to legislative oversight and equips them with essential skills in critical thinking, public speaking, and problem solving,

Youth in Government

The Mock Oversight Hearing is delivered in partnership with the YMCA’s Youth & Government program. This mock legislative oversight hearing experience allows students to role-play a legislator engaged in the investigation of an incident or issue that matters to the public. Students are given the resources to prepare for and conduct a hearing. Using research, critical thinking, and public speaking skills, students will examine the scenario, question witnesses, and then collaborate to determine and share the facts and recommended solutions. All scenarios are based on hypothetical contemporary issues facing residents across the country.

"Being on the team exposed me to things I’d never heard of before and allowed me to have a greater understanding of how the government works and what kind of processes there are to help people."
Michigan Youth in Government Participant

Participants will:

Learn about government accountability and transparency and how these concepts relate to oversight.
Research and prepare for a hypothetical state-based scenario using a contemporary issue. Past examples include infrastructure failure, questions of federalism, and environmental justice and regulations.
Conduct a full mock hearing that includes questioning witnesses and identifying solutions to complex issues.
