The State Oversight Academy led a workshop in Chicago at the Midwestern Legislative Service Agencies and Research Directors Meeting, part of the Council of State Governments. Nonpartisan staff directors from midwestern state legislatures did the rural hospital birthing center closure scenario workshop. They brainstormed oversight inquiry priorities, analyzed data, and planned potential follow up. Participants said the scenario was true to life in their legislature, and another said they wished the legislature asked their office to do more work like what the scenario taught, saying an inquiry like the scenario would be a great way to assist legislators.
