SOA Symposium 2024 – Recording Now Online

The State Oversight Academy at the Levin Center for Oversight and Democracy, housed at Wayne State University Law School, held its second symposium, “Legislators and Academics in Partnership,” on June 21, 2024.

It featured four academic papers reviewed by practitioners in the field:

  • Partisan Departures from the Administrative States by Benjamin Goehring, reviewed by Ted Booth
  • A Theory of Proactive Casework at the State Level as a Means of Bridging Access Gaps in the Provision of Constituent Services by Megan Rickman Blackwood, reviewed by Margaret Buck
  • Legislative Capacity and Regulatory Compliance: Evidence from the Opioid Epidemic by Dr. Srinivas “Chinnu” Parinandi, reviewed by Rep. David Orentlicher
  • Filibustering in the American States by Rob Oldham and Dr. Jim Curry, reviewed by Jim Townsend

A roundtable followed, featuring Speaker of the Nebraska Legislature Sen. John Arch, Oregon House Majority Leader Rep. Ben Bowman, Dr. Srinivas “Chinnu” Parinandi, and Dr. Marjorie Sarbaugh-Thompson.

Then, the inaugural SOA Oversight Leader was recognized: Rhode Island State Rep. Patricia Serpa.
