It is with pride and gratitude that I open our fall newsletter by celebrating a significant milestone for the Levin Center—our 10-year anniversary in September 2025. We marked the occasion with an event dedicated to reflecting on Congress’ vital role in defending and renewing our democracy, especially in these challenging times of rising authoritarianism.
Our keynote speaker, U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin, asked the poignant question: “What would Carl Levin do?” This question has long guided our work and our decision-making, whether we were always consciously aware of it or not. Senator Levin would show courage. He would adhere to the facts. He would call out abuses and fraud. He would be fiercely passionate about the role of Congress, and he would reach across the aisle to find common ground—even when it seemed elusive at first.
The event left me deeply inspired and renewed my sense of the Levin Center’s mission and future. As you read the highlights below, I hope you feel the same energy and optimism about the work we do to empower Congress, support lawmakers, and strengthen democratic institutions.
Hope you enjoy the read,
Jim Townsend
